SMS Pricing and Charging

Most Premium SMS services are allowed to charge premium prices, however
competitions in which the winner is selected by chance as well
as services that run voting and opinion polls can only charge
$0.55 (including GST) per message, as ruled by the Department of Racing
Gaming and Liquor.
Premium charging operates differently for each carriage
provider. For example, some carriage providers only charge the
user when a reply is sent. When the SMS is replied, it takes
half the revenue earned from that charge and the remaining half
when the destination phone receives the reply.
However, some services are recommended not to charge a premium
rate as it may discourage customers from using the service. In
cases where customers are required to update their details or
request for information material, it may be in your business'
interest not to charge a premium rate. For example, updating
information is a value-adding service for your customers and a
convenience for your administration.
